ROBERT WALTER'S 20TH CONGRESS, "MONEY SHOT"
9/4/00
(Fog City) - Take this CD out of the box and look it at it. The same as any other disc, right? Wrong. Contained in the digitized ones and zeros of this all instrumental collection is a session, a groove, funk, soul jazz and boogaloo party. If this music has a lot in common with the sounds of the Greyboy Allstars, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, and Galactic, there are good reasons for that. First off, Walter was the keyboardist in the Greyboy Allstars, the San Diego boogaloo unit that also featured saxophonist Karl Denson, and the drummer on this project is New Orleans based *wunderkind*, Stanton Moore of Galactic. Add to that the fact the music slow burns and builds all the way through to the unbridled mayhem of the title track and then starts the build all over again, and you know you are on to something. Add to that the fact that the project was produced, recorded and mixed completely live in the studio by San Francisco's Dan Prothero. Prothero, who is also responsible for Galactic's first two wonderful CDs, as well as Stanton Moore's stellar solo disc, "All Kooked Out," the follow-up to that, "Garage A Trois," and other projects, helps make this a match-up not to be missed. Prothero is to acid jazz what Lee Townsend is to jazz and Greg Landau is to Latin music: Yet another reason San Francisco's Bay Area will stay on the musical map forever. Old school meets new school, whatever; this is all good.
